Lamppost News is born!

I got the idea for this book, while riding to work every day on my motorbike. I found the newspaper posters, strung to the lampposts along my route a source of entertainment and enlightenment. The posters, put up by various newspapers in Cape Town, use catchy and often ambiguous headlines to convey their leading news story of the day. And I found it remarkable how much daily news I could get just from these headlines. So after some time, reading my news in flashes of catchy headlines, I decided that being a photographer it would be great if I could combine these news snippets about Cape Town, with shots of the city.

And so the idea of Lamppost News was born.

Then, we had the biggest sporting event in the world visit the shores of South Africa. I decided, to focus only on the one month period when soccer fever hit Cape Town, and I captured every aspect of the fan’s experience, from the Stadium in Cape Town, to the watering holes, to fan parks that were set up to enjoy live games.

So this is a record of Cape Town’s celebration of this major sporting event told through photographs, and the daily lamppost headlines.

Please sit back, page through this book and relive some of the memories. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did shooting it.
